Protecting yout Teacup Chihuahuas!

As we all know, teacup chihuahuas are not the biggest breed of dog around. At best, they will stand no higher than around 9 inches and weigh no more than a bag of sugar. Add to this the fact that the moleras (a soft spot at the top of their heads) of teacup chihuahuas do not seal and you can understand that they could be vulnerable to injury. I suspect that there may well be a market for crash helmets for teacup chihuahuas at some point in the future!
If you are considering purchasing a tea cup chihuahua, there are a few things that you will need to consider. For example, it would be appropriate to consider "tea cup chihuahua" proofing your home. Remove any heavy furniture in rooms that your tea cup chihuahua will be spending a significant amount of time in, especially anything that could topple over. You may also want to think about wrapping the furniture legs in bubble wrap to around 12 inches or so, just in case!
Pay careful attention to the environment that they are going to be in also. The household that has lots of young, boisterous children and generally high activity areas may not be the best situation for your new tea cup chihuahua, until she gets familiar with her surroundings at least!
Another thing to consider is making sure that your tea cup chihuahua can be identified in some manner should she get lost. I'm sure that you have seen the "lost dog" posters around and it always makes me wonder how many pets get re-united with their owners. It's a shame, particularly as there are some straightforward ways to make ensure that your teacup chihuahuas get returned to you, should the worst happen.
For example, I have heard of people tattooing a dog's ear with their home address or the owner's social security number. Quite apart from the risk of identity theft, I personally think tattooing a dog is a pretty unpleasant thing to do. I certainly wouldn't want it done to me! A much better idea is to get your tea cup chihuahua microchipped. Your local vet will be able to tell you more about this, but essentially a small device is injected just under the skin. This device will hold all of the owner's information, such as your name and current address.
Should your pup ever get lost, the rescuers will be able to scan your tea cup chihuahua and return it to you pretty easily. Just make sure that you have your address updated when you move!
